Thank you From Wilderness, Wildlife, and WILD!

Our many practical accomplishments in 2007 for wilderness, wildlife and people were only possible because of your help! We work for wildness, such as the feeling you sense from the curious gaze of these Eastern Caucasian Thar (in Southern Russia) in this lovely image taken this year by Patricio Robles Gil and featured in our WILD 2008 calendar.  Our planning for wildness in 2008 is well advanced.  The daily headlines on global warming, deforestation and polluted waters are an urgent call to action, and we are responding.  Your support makes this possible!  As a special holiday gift, you will receive our 2008 wall calendar for a gift of $50 or more...for $250 or more you also receive Birds and People (see below)!  For my brief overview of 2007, details of our 2008 calendar, and our "thanks!" to you, read on....

Warm wishes,

WILD 9 - The 9th World Wilderness Congress

Feel, Think, Act! Siente, Piensa, Actúa! The WILD Foundation and its partner in Mexico, Unidos para la Conservation (UPC), have just announced that the 9th World Wilderness Congress will convene in Mexico, November 2009.  As with each WWC, the program will be global, with a vigorous Latin American context, culture, atmosphere and bi-lingual proceedings.

Planning is underway and as details are formulated, they will be posted on www.wild9.org and www.wild.org.  We will, of course, also continue to post updates in upcoming issues of the E-leaf.

Uganda's Sserinya Primary School

The Sserinya Primary School Project, a product of an idea in 2001, is now an impressive site housing a school for children receiving an education for the first time in their lives!  Also on site is a clinic dispensing regular inoculations and medical care, and a dormitory & staff house to board students and staff from any of the other 83 islands that form The Ssese Islands Chain, Uganda.

The School has set a precedent for academic excellence within the Islands District, and recently held its first graduation for seventeen students of varying ages!  In a country challenged by chronic poverty, Paul Mujugumbya, a young man with a degree in civil engineering, a big heart, the support of a few generous donors, and a lot of fortitude and perseverance, made it happen.  Read more about this inspiring project >>

Wilderness Network Feature: TurnAround Project

The Wilderness Foundation (UK) announces TurnAround, a multi-faceted nature based program empowering at-risk youth to make positive changes in their lives.  The program includes working with community mentors, wilderness therapy, skill workshops and employment and education support.  Based on the healing power of nature and wilderness experiences, the TurnAround program supports youth in making positive, improved choices and taking personal responsibility for their lives.  Currently, nine youths between the ages of 15 and 17, each with their own personal struggles, have taken the initiative to work through the program.

The Wilderness Foundation is a founding member of The Wilderness Network, a consortium of independent, like-minded, forward-thinking organizations.  Read more about The Wilderness Network and TurnAround.

WILD Reaches for the Stars!

For the third consecutive year, The WILD Foundation has earned a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, an independent charity evaluator.  Charity Navigator evaluates more than 5,000 charities for organizational efficiency and capacity.  According to Charity Navigator, only 9 percent of rated charities receive three consecutive 4-star ratings, indicating that “The WILD Foundation outperforms most charities in America in its efforts to operate in the most fiscally responsible way possible.”  WILD's full review shows that over 90% of our total expenses directly support programs to protect wilderness and wildlife world-wide!

Extreme Ice Survey: Art Meets Science

Glacial melt and retreat are perhaps the most visible signs of global warming - is it possible to document glacial changes in these extreme and often unforgiving climate regions?  The Extreme Ice Survey, an initiative of Jim Balog, the outstanding conservation photographer and founding member of the International League of Conservation Photographers, has taken this challenge.  With over twenty-five time lapse cameras installed in the remote arctic regions of Greenland, Iceland, Alaska, the Alps and the Rockies, the Extreme Ice Survey team is collecting astounding visual evidence of short-                                                             term rapid glacial changes.

Birds and People: Bonds in a Timeless Journey

The latest volume from CEMEX’s series on nature, biodiversity and conservation, produced in conjunction with Agrupacion Sierra Madre and Birdlife International is a celebration of our relationship with birds.  As the most familiar and colorful group of animals we share the planet with, birds dazzle us with their vibrant adornments, provide essential ecosystem services such as pollination, play a major role in legend, myth and art, and tell us a great deal about our environment (as with the canary in the cave).  With captivating photographs and engaging stories, Birds and People reassures us that “there are welcome signs that we may now be emerging into a new maturity and wisdom in the way we relate to birds and the environments that they occupy alongside us.”  For your donation of $250 or more, we will send you a complimentary copy of this beautiful book - with 360 pages and over 200 color photographs. Donate Today!

Turn Over a New Leaf – Watch an Independent Film

The Ann Arbor Film Festival, an internationally renowned film-festival and the oldest of its kind in North America, is partnering with The WILD Foundation for their Endangered Campaign.  The wonderful folks at the Ann Arbor Film Festival understand that 'the arts' aren’t the only 'endangered species,' and have crafted a humorous short film (with a serious message) to convey the importance of both independent film and endangered wildlife.  The Film Festival will donate a portion of the campaign proceeds to The WILD Foundation, to support the protection of endangered lands and species around the world.
